When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses.
But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh
and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well. (Exo 2:15)
Moses ran from Pharaoh and sat down by a well. He arrived at the well, because he was running from the law. He had just murdered an Egyptian and feared for his life. The very people he was ordained to deliver from Pharaoh would be on their own for a while as Moses fled to the desert place. Yet it was at the well where Moses met the family who would take him in. There at the well Moses found rest, refreshment, and family. He met his wife and found a place of safety. (Exo 2:15-22)
Isaac and Jacob’s wives were both met at a well, too. They built the family, the nation of Israel, Moses was slated to deliver. (Gen 24:13-17) Isaac’s mother had died and his father, Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for Isaac from his relatives. Abraham’s slave came to the well and prayed for a sign and for a miracle. It was near instantly answered when Isaac’s future bride Rebekah came to draw water. For the servant, his prayer was answered at the well and he found what he had been sent for. He brought home to Isaac the woman who would be his family and build his family with him. There was refreshing, answers, and miracles at the well for this servant.
Jacob went looking for his own wife. He, too, stopped at a well when the very beautiful Rachel appeared. He had gone out with nothing and made a commitment to serve God if he brought him back safe and prosperous. Jacob’s well provided him his wife, a second wife, the twelve tribes of Israel, and all of his wealth.
Jesus ministered to a scarlet woman at the well and an entire village came to know Him. (Joh 4:7-39) At her well she found Living Water, a message, and direction to go and tell. She did as she was told and the entire village came out and, believing, also receiving Living Water.
We must always come to the Well of Living Water for all things. This is where we find sustenance, refreshing, family, and direction, and most important of all, the Living Water which is Jesus Christ, our Savior – our salvation. “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Act 4:12) He is where we run when the pharaohs of our lives are hot on our heels; He is our safe place. “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Pro 18:10) He is where we run when we are weary and dry; He is our refreshing. “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” (Act 3:19) He is where we run when we are lonely and outcast; He is our family. “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” (Rom 8:15-17) He is where we run to when we are in darkness and long to see light; He is our Salvation. “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’” (Joh 8:12)
Lord, I come to the well. Refresh me, fill me, and lead me on.
I rely on You; for You alone are God and there is no other!
(Isaiah 45:6)
And he showed me a pure river of water of life,
clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
(Revelations 22:1)
And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!”
And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
(Revelations 22:17)
